Considering that many flag pick-ups (at least on river) happen somewhat accidentally as part of fairly large group melees, I'm not too keen on it interferring wiith/changing a players melee combat...

There isn't that little melee combat, but it's usually a group/mass affair with individual skill being fairly low (and less important) compared to the usually small, often 1v1 fights most good...
