I've started a new map for bg2 based on a fort on the Richelieu river that was used by both Americans, and British during the Revolutionary war, the fort is located on ilse aux noix, and is called Fort Lennox.

I'll post more progress, and pics as it goes on.

Glad to see you're back at mapping, Ram. This looks like it will be fun. Let me know if you need/want any historical materials on this.

Is this area of the inner yard of this fort actually this vast? It looks like quite one of the bigger maps of bg2 already imo

well actually the grounds are even bigger then my maps layout, it was ans still is a huge fortification on a island close to the US border, i wont be making the whole island just the star shape layout.

i updated the pics at top with more detailed buildings.

what i would like Nathan is if someone can find me more pictures of Fort Lennox , i do have many pics, but some are poor quality, and my searching the net skills.....lets say i don't have any.

thx.

I will tell you what I think, this is horrible. Like all the other remakes of BG1 maps. There is a reason why we do not do that in any form. Do not bother to remake old bg1 maps. BG1 was a totally different game as draco pointed out and the maps are not going to work out on BG2.

Please lets just not have random flags scattered about that we try and hold, maybe this would be a good time to implement new game play ideas, or at least spiffing up the old versions of play...

i have no idea for now what type of map it'll be, first step is to complete it, since it's an actual place, and I'm trying to reproduce it accurately as possible, we'll figure that out later.

The architecture is looking good Ram, this could be fun. Keep it up.

--------------------

The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labor. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent. And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival. -George Orwell

map is taking allot more time then i first anticipated, problem is the size of layout ( Valve engine, and big open areas + details = shit ) so for now I'm trying different approaches for layout to keep the FPS acceptable.

your buildings are nice, everything else still needs work. Though I'm sure you know this already.

QUOTE (Hawke @ Jan 15 2011, 08:54 PM) *

I think use this image as reference but add more buildings (ones that you can't enter or your only able to walk through the middle) just for better fps. Add a wall round the whole fort

So your buildings look nice, but overall I think your trying to go for a map that is to open. Have a look at BG1 maps, what made them good was they where linear, everyone knew where the flags where and with BG1's better HUD it had way more teamwork. Its whats missing in all of BG2 maps.

of course you can make some awesome open maps like bg_bunkerhill, just needs the right desgin and gameplay.

Screw the FPS. It's time people upgraded. I'm working on Fort Ticonderoga at the moment and I made a conscious decision to hold nothing back. If you make an original map, that's one thing. However, this is a real place and you owe it to history itself to make it as accurate as possible. Plus, with the new models and such in the update BG2 should be moving up in the world. It's time this game got some respect in the mod community and that starts with us.

I think that speech went well. Good tone. Short and to the point. What's that? The mic is still on. Oh fu..

FPS still counts, you can have the nicest map in the world, but if you get 10 fps out of it, no one will play it, map is on hold for summer, i work in construction, and wen comes spring i have no time to do anything else then work work work.

the open area layout of the map is an issue i have to deal with, while trying to keep it playable. alot of areas of the map that i wanted game-play, will have to be added to the 3d skybox instead.
